What Materials will you be able to cut & engrave with your hobby laser cutting machine?

Our hobby laser cutters can cut and engrave a wide range of materials. Additionally, applying a metal marking spray allows your laser machine to create high-contrast designs on most common metals, including aluminium, stainless steel, brass, nickel plating, and more.

The proof is in the results. We are more than happy to conduct a test engraving on your product, allowing you to experience the exceptional quality and precision of our laser machines firsthand.

FAQ’s

  • The curvature of spherical objects presents a challenge, as CO2 lasers require a consistent focal point for precision; any deviation from this focal point results in a loss of engraving quality.

However, at Focused Laser Systems, all our Vision laser machines come with the added option to include a rotary attachment, enabling you to engrave with precision on cylindrical items and expand the scope of your creative or commercial projects.

  • Yes—when you follow our safety guidelines.

Our Vision Collection is Class 1 safety certified under the UK Laser Classification System and engineered with built-in protections for safe operation in homes, workshops, and educational environments.

Safe operation comes down to responsible use:

    • Always run the machine with the lid closed.

    • Ensure proper fume extraction or filtration.

    • Never leave the laser unattended while running.

    • Keep basic safety gear (e.g., a fire extinguisher) nearby.

Many of our customers safely run hobby lasers at home by staying vigilant and following these simple precautions. When we install your machine, we provide comprehensive training on operation and maintenance, ensuring you can use your system safely from day one.

  • All of our hobby laser cutters come with LightBurn software as standard. LightBurn is a user-friendly program that not only controls your laser (setting cut and engrave settings and sending jobs to the machine) but also includes basic design tools—so you can create and prepare simple artwork directly within the software.

For more advanced design, many customers use Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, CAD, or the free Inkscape, then import files into LightBurn for cutting and engraving.

During installation, we provide step-by-step training on LightBurn. Most of our customers find it intuitive and easy to learn, requiring only a little practice. If you've used tools like 2D design, PowerPoint, Canva, or Photoshop, you'll pick it up quickly.

  • Why it matters: Laser cutters generate smoke, fumes, and odours. The correct extraction protects your health and keeps your machine performing optimally.

Standard setup (best for most users):

    • Place your laser near a window or vent.

    • Use an extractor fan with a duct hose to push fumes outside

    If you can't vent outdoors:

    • Use a filtration unit with HEPA and activated carbon to capture particles and odours for safe indoor use. We recommend one of our BOFA models.

Golden rule: Never run a laser cutter in a closed, unventilated room—always remove or filter the air effectively.

Our support: We'll discuss the materials you want to process and your environment, and recommend the most effective fume-extraction solution for your machine and workspace.

  • Lifespan varies with power, usage, and maintenance. Still, you can typically expect 3 to 5 years of reliable performance from a D.C (Glass) laser tube, and upwards of 7 years for an RF (Metal) Laser tube with typical use.

Regular maintenance—covered in your installation training—such as cleaning the optics, checking alignment, and following our hobby laser cutter maintenance checklist, will help maximise both tube lifespan and the quality of your cutting and engraving.

With proper care, many hobbyists find that their tubes last toward the upper end of this range.

  • The main recurring costs are straightforward and manageable:

    • Materials – wood, acrylic, card, etc.

    • Fume extraction – if you use an indoor filtration unit, filters are your main consumable. The good news is that quality filters typically last hundreds of hours. Replacements are usually £150–£700. If venting outdoors, ongoing costs are minimal (occasional duct or carbon pre-filter).

    • Laser tube & optics – D.C. (Glass) tubes are usually replaced every 2–5 years; lenses/mirrors are replaced only occasionally.

    • Electricity – hobby CO2 lasers are efficient. A 50 W system (with accessories) typically draws 500–1000 W, about £0.20–£0.30 per hour.

Most users spend a few hundred pounds per year on consumables.

  • We provide every customer with comprehensive training to ensure you can operate your machine safely, confidently, and reliably. Maintenance is straightforward and usually takes just 5–10 minutes per session. The essentials are:

    • Keep it clean – Regularly wipe the optics (lenses and mirrors) with lens cleaner, ideally every day or after heavy use. Smoke residue can reduce power and, if left, may damage the lens/mirrors. Clear dust and small scraps from the cutting bed/tray to minimise fire risk.

    • Keep it aligned – Check mirror alignment occasionally, especially if the machine has been moved or bumped. Proper alignment ensures consistent cutting power.

    • Keep it cool – If your system uses water cooling, always use distilled water, keep it topped up, and ensure the pump or chiller is functioning correctly.

And remember—every Focused Laser Systems machine comes with lifetime technical support. If you're ever unsure, please don't hesitate to call, and our team will be happy to help.

  • When we deliver your machine, we'll take time to understand the types of projects you want to create and tailor the training so you can start cutting and engraving with confidence from day one.

Every new skill comes with a learning curve, but you'll never be on your own. We provide lifetime technical support, so whenever you have questions, our team is here to help.

For hands-on advice, explore our Laser Processing Techniques guides—packed with tips on cutting and engraving a wide range of materials.

  • Yes—extra care makes it achievable. Focus on ventilation and sensible setup:

    • Ventilation – Direct fumes away from neighbouring windows with an inline fan and window adapter, or use one of our filtration units for safe indoor operation

    • Noise – Our systems are relatively quiet, but sound can carry; run at reasonable hours.

    • Space & safety – Use a stable surface, keep flammables away, and have a CO2 fire extinguisher nearby.

For tiny spaces, a compact desktop laser engraver can also be a great choice. These machines are designed to fit neatly into home studios or apartments while still delivering professional cutting and engraving results.

  • Yes—cooling is mandatory for glass laser tubes. Your glass CO2 laser tube generates heat while firing, and a water circuit carries that heat away to protect the tube and maintain stable power.

For our hobby laser machines equipped with a glass laser tube, we supply and install a dedicated active water chiller specifically designed to match your laser tube. On delivery, we'll set everything up (with distilled water), dial in safe temperatures, and train you on best practices.

Our team is always ready to offer expert advice and answer any questions you may have.

Whether you’re booking a demo, ordering a sample engraving, asking for a quote, or needing help with your laser system, our team of laser engineers and sales experts are here to answer any queries you may have.
